Pocket PC for Marine NavigationPosted by markus ritter in Untagged |
I am developing a Navigation seminar that focuses on a Pocket PC with Maptech's Pocket Navigator and the Windows Mobile 5 (WM5) operating system. I picked the Pharos GPS 525+ with the built in GPS and Wi-Fi.
Tests with the demo version from Memory-Map.com showed that it uses a unique chart format called Quick Chart, but they give you the software you need to convert from BSB to Quick Chart. I tried it and I liked it. I ordered the defeatured version called Pocket Navigator from Maptech for $50. I was able to get all of the US and Canadian Great Lake charts loaded into the 1G SD card. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Phaors GPS 525 is pretty versatile, I get to use it on the road for street navigation, checking my e-mail at hotspots, as well as looking up stuff on the net. Yesterday I even played a power point presentation that I downloaded from the net. Last spring, I bought the Fugawi Fishing Hotspots disk and I plan to try that one too. _______________________________________________________________________________________ The 525 hooks up to Wi-Fi hotspots pretty well once I learned a few tricks. In Dec. 06', I made my first VoIP call using Skype to a regular phone utilizing the Wi-Fi connection at the North Shore Medical Clinic. It works very well when listening to a real person, but when listening to electronic answering machine's messages there is lots of static, but understandable. The recording left on the answering machine was just fine. _______________________________________________________________________________________ The Power Point Sampler will be available in mid January 07'.
