This year the Door County Sail & Power Squadrons is teaching the essentials of using a GPS by using the free raster charts from NOAA and the free chart viewers from Maptech.
You could get a great introduction to using these free charts by attending the last two sessions of the America’s Boating Course (1st two Wednesdays of August). You will probably not need to buy the $32 book, but it does a great job of leading you through the steps. Registration is required in the spring we compacted it into one two hour session. I have been using the electronic raster charts from NOAA and commercially available Chart Viewers since I got my two Garmin GPS 12’s in 1999. The charts and chart viewers back then were not free, however, they make for an excellent planning tool and they allow you to download the routes you create to most of the popular GPS’s. Now I use the free charts and viewers almost exclusively to create routes before I leave. A great way to avoid dealing with the highly error prone number entry task. I call it GPS without tears. Note: the Canadian electronic raster charts are not yet free. Underway I also use the Pocket Navigator on my Pocket PC when I deviate from the preset routes too much. |
