From Float Plans to Life Jackets |

After Monday’s event, boaters are cautioned to take safety measures seriously to prevent dangerous situations. Lt. Cmdr. Joseph P. Malinauskas, Sector Lake Michigan Public Affairs Officer, highlights ways to ensure safety on the water: 1. We always advise boaters to file float plans with yacht clubs or family members or friends to let individuals know where and when you’re going to be back, and where you’re headed. (A FLOAT PLAN: Play it safe, keep a stack of float plan forms on hand. Leave a copy with a friend, relative or local marina before heading out on the water. In case of an emergency, pertinent information will be right at their fingertips to enable them to contact the local marine police or Coast Guard with necessary details. A word of caution—in case you’re delayed, and it’s not an emergency, inform those with your float plan, and be sure to notify them when you return so the float plan can be “closed out,” and an unnecessary and costly search avoided.) 2. Life jackets are always an added plus, obviously. And the wearing of life jackets is always recommended. 3. We always recommend that boaters have marine band (VHF) radios on board, something with communication.
