Boat Detailing 101 Print E-mail
From Matt Lapp’s Shammy to Yours:
Matt owns and operates Northern Details of Sister Bay, WI.

• Common Mistake Number One: Choosing the wrong soap. Whether it has been a week or two after you’ve waxed your boat, it’s bound to get dirty. Many boat owners make the mistake of using a detergent, like Dawn Dish Soap, or something really harsh to wash their boats clean of dust and dirt. When you use these detergents, you’re removing the wax. Without the wax, the boat has no protection, so it gets oxidized again. To properly care for your boat, wax it every five to six weeks, cleaning with boat soap. Never use detergent on any smooth surfaces, because it will eat off the wax, the sun will hit it and your boat will look chalky again.

Common Mistake Number Two: Letting water spots sit on the windows, metal, stainless steel—any surface for too long. Especially the hard water up here, because it’s so full of calcium. The calcium carbonate becomes like a permanent structure the calcium rich water sits on surfaces of your boat for extended periods of time.

If you are washing or waxing yourself, buy a good boat soap, wipe the windows with a shammy, also dry the chrome and stainless steel first. Otherwise, you can wash your boat with soft water, not hard. Being aware of these little things can make a huge difference in the appearance of your boat.

Occasionally, you should also have your boat professionally waxed. Because boats usually don’t have a clear coat like a car, they are not as protected. They get oxidized after awhile, so you should always keep it waxed. This wax coat will be especially helpful, not only to the life of your boat, but also in avoiding the oxidized or chalky look.

The Difference Between Professional and Do-It-Yourself Waxing and Washing
The main difference is the detail of the cleaning. Professional cleaners are more detail-oriented. We do all of the windows, seats, the floor, the compartments, stainless steel. We take out the carpet and we do the floor underneath the carpet. It’s also a great idea to have your boat professionally cleaned because these people are equipped with the proper tools and cleaning supplies to ensure all areas of your boat receive the appropriate attention.
