U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Door County Sail & Power Squadron Coordinate Boating Safety Services

Friday June 9, 2006 may well be labeled as marking a milestone  in the
the annals of  sail and motor boating on the navigable waters surrounding
the Northern Door Peninsula. The Sail & Power Squadron (DCS&PS) and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 04-06 of Algoma/Sturgeon Bay(AUX)  have decided to combine and coordinate their efforts with respect to teaching Boating Skill and Safety Classes as well as Vessel Safety Inspections. This is the fruit of a discussion initiated two years ago between Carole I. Biddick, AP Commander of the Door County Sail and Power Squadron and Ray Kostiuk, Flotilla Commander of the Algoma/Sturgeon Bay U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The fact that Governor James Doyle signed into law the requirement that every person born after January 1, 1989 must pass successfully a boating course to operate any motor driven vessel , though not the main factor, did however influence this action along with the
fact that waterways of Door and Kewaunee Counties have become increasingly more crowded and the types of boats more varied

The meeting was held at the Portside Restaurant in Algoma, Wisconsin at
6:30 PM.  Executive Officer of the DCS&PS, Thomas M. Cashin, Flotilla Vice Commander of the Auxiliary, Bill Porter and Phil Good, Auxiliary Vessel Examiner  and Marine Safety Officer, assisted Commanders Biddick and Kostiuk in assuring that activities of both volunteer organizations would be unaltered and safeguarded.  In the future the local and regional newspapers and radio broadcasts, which customarily alert the public of the activities of both organizations, will be informed of the dates, times and locations of boating safety courses as well as the dates, times and locations where free vessel inspections will be conducted by both organizations; this briefly is the resulting bottom line of the Algoma meeting.
