So, after spending 34 years flying as an airline pilot, Harbor Master Steve Smith’s retirement brought his feet back to the ground. Because he had done work for the Village of Egg Harbor, and had a boat in the marina, he was asked to be harbor master of Egg Harbor Municipal Dock just two years into his retirement. Steve was just filling in until the village found someone who could permanently replace the previous harbor master’s absence. But he’s now in his second year working for the marina. He enjoys working with the young people and the visitors while he supervises the marina and takes care of everything from planning and assigning duties, to making sure all supplies are stocked and problems are fixed in a reasonable amount of time. Steve said that because the visitors to the village mostly likely won’t see the village president or manager, the marina workers play a big part in setting the scene. “Part of our job is to be ambassadors for the village,” he said. “So, my principle role is to make sure we’re being good representatives for the village.” Besides the friendly atmosphere, they also work to create an efficient and safe operation for all of the people utilizing their facility. “That’s why on the back of our shirts it says, ‘Play nice,’ because we want to remind everybody that when they come here, everything should sort of stay behind and that they should have fun,” Steve said. “This is where people come to have fun.” What do you like about the Egg Harbor Mun. Dock? Some days are incredibly difficult and hard, but most of the time, this is a very nice place to work—it’s outdoors for the most part, you get to meet a lot of people, you’re around boats, you’re looking out at a beautiful place on Door County. As a part-time summer job, it’s hard to beat something like this. What is special or unique about the Egg Harbor Municipal Dock’s Facilities? We’re a very small marina, we have a sort of a tight-knit bunch of tenants that have been here for awhile and know each other and they get along. And Saturdays we have family race day and a number of our sailboats take part in that every week. We have a very active yacht club here that has a lot of social events and things. And we also are one of the last remaining launches that really doesn’t have any problem getting boats in and out.
We’re one of the harbors that is close to downtown. All you have to do is walk up through that pretty park there and then you’ve literally got every restaurant, every store, every business in Egg Harbor is just a very short walk away.
We don’t have any problem with kids down here—we have a playground for the kids. We invite kids to come down here. We’ve got barbecue beds everywhere, picnic tables…we’re trying to have this as a family attraction—that’s our goal. And the combination of marina and the beach together is a big family draw in our view. What precautions should boaters take for a safe trip in and out of the marina? Like all of Door County you have to pay attention where you’re boating. They really need to call in and make their reservations as early as possible, especially if they want to stay over a weekend, or stay overnight or something. The other thing is, this is almost impossible to say, but it’s pretty clear if you want to have the best time here, you should come on a week day because weekends are crowded. If you’re a fisherman or water-skier, or just someone who wants to go out and have a really pleasant boating experience, try us on the week days because we don’t have nearly as many people. It’s easy to lose your patience on weekends when there are so many people. Come try us on the week days if you want to have a really nice experience for sure. Who should boaters contact? The marina’s number, which is (920) 868-2048 or we monitor marine radio channels 9 and 16. Who else is available to help boaters? Rick Klnetski: Dock master Richard Hutchinson Morgan Popp Kara Mathys
