HARBOR MASTER SCOTT BIRD
Scott Bird earned his Bachelor’s of Science from St. Paul before he spent 16 years in Florida, delivering boats as a corporate captain for JM Family Enterprises. Scott’s work was more well-known for the name of the boat he worked with, Gallant Lady.  But, because his job involved being out of the country for 220 days of the year, he and his family moved to Door County so he could take the position awaiting him at Quarterdeck.

Seven years later and Bird is still enjoying his work as harbor master of Quarterdeck Marina. While he’s busy overseeing the storage, slips and overall day-to-day business, those aren’t the only reasons he loves his job—the people bring him to work each day, “The kids and the customers—my crew,” Bird said.

What do you like about Quarterdeck Marina?
We redid everything in 2004—there’s a nice pavilion, park, pond and outdoor pool.  I also like that it’s laid back. We have customer appreciation parties and a calendar of events each season in coordination with Harbor Club Marina (The calendar has events like boat shows, cruises and festivities for boaters to enjoy).

What is special or unique about the Quarterdeck Marina’s Facilities?
It’s unique because we have a lot of green space for a marina.  It’s also kid and animal friendly.  Next year we are going to redo the showroom in here and we are going to be putting bathroom suites in and expanding the boater’s lounge.

What precautions should boaters take for a safe trip in and out of the marina?
When they come around the corner, people mistake Purves Lagoon’s buoys for ours. Basically, when you come into our entrance, you’ve got the red and green buoys.  When you reach our red and green in front of the mooring, when you’re lined up, you’ll see our blue building.

Who should boaters contact?
The marina’s number, which is (920) 743-8985, or they can call on the marine radio, channel 9 and then we switch to channel 14.

Who else is available to help boaters?
Sherry Knapmiller
