HARBOR MASTER SAM HANSON
His dad built sailboats, even though Sam Hanson preferred cruising around in something with a key. His life around boats, his love for swimming and water-skiing and his upbringing, are what he credits his appreciation for safety on the water. So, Sam became a harbor master in California when the opportunity arose.  He spent about three years there, and then another three as harbor master in an Oklahoma marina before moving back to his roots in Ellison Bay.

Sam enjoys working at the Ellison Bay Safe Harbor, and is now in his third year as its harbor master.  He just enjoys doing the job, but this location is special because it used to be the lagoon he swam in as a child. It’s not just the childhood memories that draw him to his job, though.

“I like talking with the people, communicating with them, and making sure that their boat is safe, that everybody has a life jacket and that everybody has a seat in the boat,” Sam said.  He enjoys ensuring every boater’s safety whether staying for a few nights or just a couple of hours.

What do you like about the Ellison Bay Safe Harbor?
They have Wills Park—picnic tables, chairs.

The thing that I like about the harbor master, is we can tell boaters to do certain things and how to do it in a safe matter.

What is special or unique about the Ellison Bay Safe Harbor’s Facilities?
What I did, is see the ladders?  Because the water’s so low, I put the ladders in—I made the ladders, I’m a jack of all trades, so then people can get out of their boats.

What precautions should boaters take for a safe trip in and out of the marina?
I tell them that if you’re going to go around the Ellison Bay Bluff, if you’re going to go around the Door Bluff, stay out because now that the water’s so low it doesn’t drop off as fast, but stay out about 100 feet and that way it drops off.

When boaters come over here, give me the arrival date and the departure date, I provide a slip number.  I also recommend putting the bow of the boat out—it makes smooth parking with a NW wind coming in.

Who should boaters contact?
The marina’s number, which is (920) 421-1974 or they can call on the marine radio, channel 9.

Who else is available to help boaters?
Just look for Sam Hanson!
