“HARBOR MASTER” KEVIN EGAN
For the last three years, of his five total working at Baileys Harbor Yacht Club, Kevin Egan has been the “harbor master.” He began as the general manager, and was eventually asked to oversee the marina in addition to the resort.

He oversees the slips, marina opening in the spring, gas sales, pumpout, pier maintenance and prepares the marina for day-to-day business. He may not have much boating experience to pull from, but living on the water and his general manager position at the resort are key to helping the boaters enjoy their stay at the resort and on the water.

What do you like about Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Marina?
It’s connected to the resort here, and boaters can stay at the resort. If they stay here, they have use of our amenities—indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpool and sauna.  It’s a very quiet location.  Our side of Baileys Harbor backs up to a wildlife refuge and sanctuary.  Also, the peace and quiet and beautiful sunsets.  We’re on the east side of the harbor, so they look out across the water to the sunset.

What is special or unique about Baileys Harbor Yacht Club’s Marina’s facilities?
I guess the location, and that it’s connected to a full-service resort.

What precautions should boaters take for a safe trip in and out of the marina?
Well, obviously make their reservation as early as possible because we only have a few slips. The water level in Lake Michigan is always questionable, so they need to check with us on the water level, because parts of our marina—this year the north side we have not been able to open because of the water level.  We have to dredge next spring.  So, they should just check on the water level and let us know because it is semi-private.  They have to let us know what time they’re coming in because we don’t have a dock master down there at all times.  So, for example, they can’t just call and say, “We’ll be there in an hour,” and “We’re coming in at 8 o’clock tonight,” because there’s not going to be anybody there.

In the middle of the lake coming into the harbor, there is a (it’s well marked on all the boating maps) but the east side of the harbor, there’s a shelf that runs out from the point. But it’s marked with bell buoys.

Who should boaters contact?
The marina’s number, which is (920) 839-2336, or they monitor marine radio channel 9.

Who else is available to help boaters?
Bob Armour
Matt
