“HARBOR MASTER” BOB OURADNIK
Bob Ouradnik used to make cast iron patterns for foundries in Green Bay, but when he married into the Peterson family, owners of the Wagon Trail Resort and Marina since 1975, he and his wife saw an opportunity to offer their services and became a part of the family business in 1983.

The Wagon Trail Marina caters mainly to fishermen in terms of seasonal slip holders, although they do have a few transient slips in May and early June.

The marina’s location near Mink River, one of the few rivers that have their own tides, is what makes Wagon Trail perfect for nature watching and fishing throughout the year—the river never really freezes like the rest of the waters surrounding the Door County Peninsula.

What do you like about the Wagon Trail Marina?
The location—it is one of the prettiest spots.  We have Rowleys Bay and then the Mink River coming into it. It’s one of a kind.  The location here is kind of nice in the wintertime; the water never really freezes up, so there’s nature activity—I’ve counted over 30 swans swimming around in wintertime.  And in most other places up here, in the whole northern end, all you see is ice, but there are local people driving out here in January just to eat their lunch, looking at the water.

The fishermen love it because we have a ferry dock that was owned by the state, before they built the North Port Dock, when the ferry ran out of Gills Rock.  So, it’s a nice dock and we lease it out to some fishermen and they love it because they can fish year round there and they can’t in other places.

What is special or unique about the Wagon Trail Marina’s Facility?
Mink River is one of the only rivers where the water will change directions.  It will be going in the river at certain times of the day and then other times of the day it will be leaving—it goes back and forth.  There’s like a tide in Rowleys Bay, we call it a seiche, and about 6 times a day it will rise about 8 inches and then drop back down so that river’s always changing direction—that makes it very unique.

What precautions should boaters take for a safe trip in and out of the marina?
There are buoys out there, shipping buoys, and if they know navigation—how to approach when you see them, what side to go on and that.  There are four-foot shoals, which aren’t marked, but are, I imagine right now, almost out of the water. The water’s down so low, but that is an unmarked area and there is another area that isn’t marked, kind of right where Rowley’s Bay starts. If you drew an imaginary line from where Lake Michigan, the open water is, and where Rowleys Bay would start, there is a little shallow spot. It’s probably about two feet deep and it’s not marked, but even on a cloudy day it’s pretty easy to see. The water is kind of a light color and other than that if you kind of head right straight into the bay, it’s pretty good.  You’d want to check your depth charts when you’re going in any unfamiliar territory.  It isn’t like the bay side where it’s 100 feet deep a little ways off shore.

Who should boaters contact?
The resort number, which is (920) 854-2385 (They do not monitor any marine radio channels on a regular basis).

Who else is available to help boaters?
Seasonal employees
