Then he began working for the Lombard, IL, Police Department for six years before he decided to settle down in Door County with his family. “Just because it was like a drunk owning a bar and I figured if I got away from racing, because it’s like a blood-driven sport, and being away from that was the best thing I could do,” Krueger said. He and his family then developed what used to be an eight slip, five-rental-boat marina, with the addition of a motel and restaurant, and continued to improve it to what Kap’s Marina is today. Five of his seven children are still active in the Kap’s Marina business. Between Krueger and one of his sons, they oversee and are involved in everything with the marina—docking boats, making reservations, the dock’s design and more. “I had no prior experience, but after 30 years I have some!” Krueger said. What do you like about the Kap’s Marina? Well, we have brand new docks that are 50 feet long now, and there’s 40 feet between these docks so it’s much easier for us to dock boats and for boats to pull into. What is special or unique about the Kap’s Marina’s Facilities? Location—easy access in and out and we are where all the activity is on Washington Island. We’re right by the ferry dock, where the Cherry Train leaves, where gift shops are. We have a restaurant, there’s a restaurant right near us, too, and also another restaurant. So, we’re right where most of the activity on the island is—the biggest thing would be the Cherry Train and then the ferry dock. What precautions should boater take for a safe trip in and out of the marina? There aren’t any shoals nearby—it’s simple. Just call ahead of time. Who should boaters contact? The marina’s number, which is (920) 847-2640, or they can call on the marine radio, channels 9 or 16. Who else is available to help boaters? Kevin Krueger Keenan Krueger Katie Krueger
